Eureka Math Grade 5, Module 5: Addition and Multiplication with Volume and Area
In this unit, your child joins measurement and geometry. They find volume by packing boxes with cubes and by multiplying, add the volumes of figures made of two boxes, find the area of rectangles with fraction side lengths, and sort quadrilaterals by their properties. It uses the fraction multiplication from the unit before and comes ahead of problem solving on the coordinate plane.

What is my child learning in Module 5?
- Finding the area of a rectangle with fraction side lengths, like a 1/2 by 3/4 foot tray, by tiling or multiplying to get 3/8. Learn more: Multiplying fractions, like 2/3 × 4/5
- Understanding volume as the number of cubic units that pack a solid with no gaps or overlaps. Learn more: Volume: how much space is inside a solid
- Packing and counting unit cubes layer by layer to measure volume in cubic centimeters, inches, or feet. Learn more: Finding volume by counting cubes
- Multiplying length × width × height, or base area × height, and adding the volumes of solids made from two boxes. Learn more: Finding the volume of a box
- Reasoning that a square has all the properties of a rhombus and of a rectangle, because it is both. Learn more: Why a square is also a rectangle
- Sorting quadrilaterals into a hierarchy by properties like parallel sides, equal sides, and right angles. Learn more: Sorting four-sided shapes into a family tree
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
The blue part of the rectangle shows 1/3 × 2/5, and the whole rectangle is 1. What is 1/3 × 2/5?
- 2/15
- 2/13
- 3/8
How you can help
- Measure a small tray or placemat in feet, like 1/2 by 3/4 foot. Ask your child to multiply the sides for the area, 3/8 square foot, and sketch the tiles that show it.
- Find the volume of a shipping box together. Measure its length, width, and height in inches, multiply, and talk about how many 1-inch cubes would fill it.
- Sort shapes cut from an empty cereal box into groups like parallelograms, rectangles, and squares. Ask your child which groups a square belongs in, and why it fits all three.
Where kids can get stuck
- Multiplying only two dimensions, finding the area of the base and forgetting the height.
- Adding the side lengths of a 1/2 by 3/4 rectangle, getting 5/4 instead of the area, 3/8.
- Mixing up branches of the family tree, thinking a rhombus needs right angles.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
Words your child will hear
- area
- How much surface a flat shape covers, like a tabletop.
- volume
- How much space a 3-D shape takes up or holds.
- unit cube
- A cube with each side 1 unit long, used to measure volume.
- cubic unit
- A cube with sides 1 unit long, used to measure volume.
- rectangular prism
- A box shape with six rectangle faces.
- quadrilateral
- Any flat shape with four straight sides.
- parallelogram
- A four-sided shape with two pairs of parallel sides.
- rhombus
- A four-sided shape with all four sides the same length.
- attribute
- A feature of a shape, like its number of sides or its angles.
