Eureka Math Kindergarten, Module 3: Comparison of Length Weight Capacity and Numbers to 10

In this unit, comparing ties everything together. Your child decides which of two objects is longer, heavier, or holds more, then uses the same thinking with numbers, saying which group has more and which number is greater up to 10. After the shapes unit, children return to numbers with sharper comparing skills, ready for the next unit's work with number pairs, adding, and subtracting.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

You and your friend each have 7 stickers. Who has more?

  • You
  • You both have the same
  • Your friend

How you can help

  1. Fill two different cups with water at the sink or in the bath, pour one into the other, and ask your child which cup holds more.
  2. Compare two shoes from the closet, first by lining up their heels to see which is longer, then by holding one in each hand to feel which is heavier.
  3. Write two numbers up to 10 on paper and ask which is greater, then let your child build each with toys to check the answer.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Comparing two ribbons without lining up their ends, so the one sticking out further looks longer.
  • Thinking a taller glass always holds more, even when a shorter, wider bowl holds more water.
  • Saying 6 is greater than 9 because the two numerals look alike or the 6 was written larger.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
