Zearn Math Kindergarten, Mission 5: Numbers 10-20 and Counting to 100

In this unit, your child sees the numbers 11 to 20 as ten ones and some more ones, counts to 100 by ones and by tens, and starts counting from any number instead of 1. It builds on the number pairs and addition to 10 from the last unit, then gives way to comparing and building shapes at the end of the year.

Sample questions to try together

These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.

Question 1 of 3

What comes next? 10, 20, 30, 40, __

  • 60
  • 50
  • 41

How you can help

  1. Count 10 crackers into one pile and a few more into a second pile. Name the teen number together, like ten and 6 make 16.
  2. Count jumping jacks together, starting from a number your child picks, like 18. Keep going and see how high you can get.
  3. Count to 100 by tens with high fives, one high five for each ten. Then try counting by ones from 50 to 60.

Where kids can get stuck

  • Pausing at a number like 69, unsure that 70 is the ten that comes next.
  • Counting the starting number as a step, so 3 more than 5 lands on 7 instead of 8.
  • Making the ten with 9 or 11 objects, because they lost count while building it.

Practice makes perfect

Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
