Every child arrives with their own story. Maybe your fourth grader still counts on their fingers. Maybe your kindergartner is already adding. If math has been hard, that's common, and it isn't your fault or your child's. Practice should feel like a stretch, not a struggle, and that starts on day one.
Your child's first few sessions
- Earn a badge in each area. Your child practices four areas of math: numbers and place value, problem solving, measurement and data, and geometry. Each time we find their level in an area, they earn a badge for it.
- Stop anytime. Your child can say “I'm done for now” and pick up right where they left off next time.
- Get the starting picture. Once all four areas have a level, you get your child's first progress report by email.
Let them show what they know
For these first few sessions, please don't help with the math just yet. Your child's own answers are how we find just the right level. Once their first progress report arrives, you'll know exactly where to help.
It's practice, not a test
Nothing about these first sessions is graded. Your child gets the same hints, second tries and clear explanations as always, and can say “I don't know yet” when something is new.
A level for each area of math
Math isn't one skill. Your child might be flying in geometry and still building in numbers and place value. So each area gets its own level, and practice meets your child where they are in each one.
What you get
Your first progress report comes from me, with where your child is starting in each area. Until it arrives, your dashboard shows how close they are. From then on, practice picks up right where they are, and later Growth Checks show you how far they've come.
Behind, ahead, or somewhere in between
It's never too late. If your child is behind, they start where they can succeed, and their confidence grows with every level. If they're ahead, there's plenty to stretch them. And whenever you'd like your child to review prior learning or try what's coming next, you can choose any skill from PK-5. Brothers and sisters each get their own levels too.
Questions parents ask
Where will my child start?
Right where they are. In their first few sessions, we find their level in each area of math, so practice feels just right from then on.
What if my child is behind?
It's never too late. Your child starts where they can succeed, and builds from there. Learn more about building your child's confidence →
What if my child is ahead?
They'll find plenty to stretch them. You can also choose any skill from PK-5 for them to try. Learn more about choosing a skill →
Is it a test?
No. It's practice, with hints and explanations, and your child earns a badge in each area.
Should I help my child?
Not just yet. For the first few sessions, let your child answer on their own. Once their first progress report arrives, you'll know just where to help.
When will I get the first progress report?
Once we've found your child's level in all four areas. Your dashboard shows how close they are.
Can I choose my child's starting level?
Their first few sessions find it for you. You can update your child's grade in your settings at any time, and choose any skill for them to practice.
What comes after the first few sessions?
Practice at their level, and a Growth Check every so often to see how much they've grown. Learn more about Growth Checks →
