Eureka Math Kindergarten, Module 1: Numbers to 10
In this unit, your child starts the year by getting to know every number up to 10 very well. Kindergartners sort objects by color or size, count each sorted group, match numerals to amounts, and see that 7 can be shown many ways, such as 5 and 2. This strong grip on the first ten numbers is the base for everything ahead, beginning with flat and solid shapes next.

- Counting each object once and seeing that 7 is still 7 whether it is shown as 5 and 2 or as 4 and 3. Learn more: How counting tells you how many
- Counting up to 10 objects arranged in lines, rows and columns, circles, or scattered piles, and counting out a group of a given size. Learn more: Counting groups of up to 20 things
- Sorting objects by color, size, or kind, counting each group, and saying which group has the most. Learn more: Sorting things into groups and counting them
Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
How many apples do you see?
- 9
- 7
- 8
How you can help
- Sort a pile of socks by color, count each color group together, and let your child write the number for each pile on a scrap of paper.
- Show 7 on your fingers in different ways, such as 5 and 2 or 4 and 3, and ask your child whether it is still 7 each time.
- Arrange 8 pillows or cushions in a line, then in a circle, and ask your child to count them each way to see that the number stays the same.
Where kids can get stuck
- Thinking a group grows when it is spread out, so they expect 8 spread-out cushions to be more than 8.
- Sorting by their own rule, such as size, when the question asked them to sort by color.
- Counting a circle of objects round and round, without marking the one where they started.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
