Math Expressions Kindergarten, Unit 2: 5-Groups in Numbers 6-10
In this unit, your child sees the numbers 6 to 10 as a group of 5 and some more, such as 7 as 5 and 2. They count and write numbers to 10 and count out amounts when asked. It grows from the numbers 1 to 5 in the first unit and prepares your child for teen numbers, which are 10 and some more.

Sample questions to try together
These are real questions from our practice. Tap the speaker to hear one read aloud, or the light bulb for a hint, and talk about the answer together.
Question 1 of 3
How many apples do you see?
- 9
- 7
- 8
How you can help
- Use one hand as a group of 5. Hold up 5 fingers and 3 more on the other hand, and ask your child how many in all: 5 and 3 make 8.
- Line up cereal pieces in rows of 5. Ask your child to make 9 with one full row of 5 and 4 more, then try 6 and 10.
- Line up 10 stuffed animals or large toys for a parade and count them. Then write the number 10 on a paper sign for the front of the line.
Where kids can get stuck
- Counting all the fingers from 1 every time, instead of starting from a full hand of 5.
- Jumping between two rows of objects and losing track of which ones have been counted.
- Leaving the space blank for an empty group, instead of writing 0 to show none.
Practice makes perfect
Bobby's Math Club has practice problems that adapt to your child’s level, each with a detailed explanation and an easy-to-follow video, so your child can build confidence in these skills one step at a time.
